Our Commitment to Sustainability

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." Surah Baqarah 2:30

With this authority, comes great responsibility - to care for our environment.

At Darul Hijrah books, we are committed to sustainability. We love our environment and believe every small step contributes to protecting our planet.

The packaging your books arrive to you in- has all been reused. We reuse the bubble wrap, the boxes and the plastic packaging. Where possible we also use compostable packaging.

We strongly encourage you to reuse the packaging too! Otherwise, soft plastic can be recycled at the supermarket, and cardboard in your yellow recycling bin. Compostable packaging can be placed in your home compost bin (if you do not have one, give it a go!).

We do not print business cards, receipts or attach swing tags to our products - these all end up in the bin and are wasted resources. Your receipt is emailed to you & information about us can be found on our website - Alhamdulillah for technology!

Once you have read your books and no longer need them - pass them on to others! Share the beneficial knowledge (you can sell them or let friends and family borrow them).

These small steps all contribute to sustainable living - which is at the heart of the Islamic way of life.

What does 'Darul Hijrah' mean?

means 'place of migration or refuge'.

If we look at the seerah (the life of prophet Muhammad ﷺ), the first place of refuge for the Muslims was Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia). Following persecution in Makkah, a group of Muslims migrated to Abyssinia (Habasha in Arabic).

The next Darul Hijrah for the nascent Muslim community was Madinah al Munawwarah, "the Enlightened City" ('madinah' in Arabic means 'city'). After a decade of persecution in Makkah, the divine decree had come to 'migrate'. The migration to Madinah began a new era in the seerah; a time of prosperity and growth for Muslims.

Darul Hijrah has many meanings for us. It symbolises the struggle migration entails - moving to a foreign place. It also signifies the new horizons migration may hold for the migrator. A lot of the Muslims in New Zealand have migrated at some point, whether it be 5 years ago or 500. New Zealand is thus a place of migration but also a place of new opportunities (akin to Madinah!).

Our du'a (prayer) for you is that as you open a new book from our store, may its pages migrate you to new places, new horizons and new ways of thinking.

Ameen :)
